Sports massage is used to treat muscle soreness, ankle sprains, hamstring strains, plantar fasciitis and other injuries sustained during sporting events, exercise or pre-game practice.

Our massage therapists may use one or more of the following massage techniques during a sports massage. Each one is designed to accomplish a different goal – some massage strokes warm up muscles, while others stimulate nerves or stretch muscles.

Surfing, Running, Paddling, Martial Arts and conventional sports can put a great strain on your body. Find relief in massage

Effleurage

This warm-up stroke is used at the beginning and ending of a sports massage Honolulu to relax the client’s muscles. The practitioner’s fingers and hands are spread apart to apply firm pressure to increase circulation and warm up muscles for the more intense massage strokes to follow.

Petrissage

The most recognizable massage stroke, petrissage is another word for kneading. This deep tissue massage moves fluid and stretches tight muscles. It’s used mainly on larger muscles.

Frictions

Long, slow strokes used during sports massage are called frictions. The massage therapist may apply these strokes in a circular motion. They are helpful in locating and breaking down scar tissue or finding other problems. The massage therapist Honolulu uses his or her thumb to check for problems. Frictions can repair muscle problems, but they may trigger inflammation. To prevent this, the massage practitioner usually follows frictions with lighter effleurage strokes.

Vibrations

The massage therapist shakes the client’s hand, back or buttocks using vibrations, a motion designed to stimulate nerves.

Percussion

The percussion strokes used by massage therapists consist of cupping, hacking and tapotement motions. As the name implies, the practitioner will cup his or her hands on the client’s muscles and apply pressure, sometimes tapping with the fingertips. The massage therapist may make chopping motions with a fist or an open palm using a stroke known as hacking. This motion is used on fleshy parts of the body to bring blood closer to the surface and facilitate easier interchange of fluids. During tapotment, the massage therapist lightly drums fingertips on muscles to calm or stimulate nerves.

Sports Massage Before Competition Can Improve Performance

Sports teams occasionally employ sports massage therapists to perform massages before or during games to increase athletic performance. A short sports massage of up to 15 minutes enhances strength and performance for individuals participating in both solo and team sports.
Sports massage Honolulu helps minimize injuries by enhancing the athlete’s range of motion, muscles and circulation with a mini-massage. Massage relieves the emotional stress of competition without relaxing the athlete too much. It helps the athlete achieve greater mental focus and remain alert without anxiety. By better preparing the client physically and mentally for competition, there’s less chance of injury. A skilled massage therapist can prevent or treat delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), a condition affecting athletes a few hours after participating in a new or strenuous exercise. If not addressed, DOMS can interfere with everyday activities as well as athletic ability.
